When you think of the Prison Ministry, what comes to mind? People who have committed crimes, people in poverty, people who are dangerous. Maybe you simply feel uneasy at the idea of even communicating or being in contact with criminals? Many of us have pre-conceived notions about the people who are in prison. Through our Prison Ministry we try to look past those notions to see the needs of those who've been incarcerated. We reach out to them with the love of Christ and show them the hope that He can bring.
The Prison Ministry at Horizons Church was established approximately three years ago. We partner with Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship for some of our ministry and work with local prisons and detention centers to provide ministry to the people there. We visit the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County, on a monthly basis, ministering to both men and women. We have reached out to prisoners through visits, letters, and distributing gifts to their families on behalf of the inmates during Christmas. We visit the Salem Home for Youth with the special speakers and music teams and have ministered to groups as large as 75 kids. We have prayed for the needs of many of these young people and have seen several of them commit their lives to Christ through this ministry.
The mission of the Prison Ministry is to reach out to those who are imprisoned and to their families, to share the good news of Jesus Christ, to show genuine Christian love, and to care for and to support them during this difficult time in their lives.
The Angel Tree program allows us, as the body of Christ, to reach out to the families of prisoners and deliver gifts to their children for Christmas on behalf of their incarcerated parent. Last Year we reached out to 27 children with this program.
God is touching and changing people's lives through this ministry. If you'd like to get involved or have questions please email us PrisonMinistry@horizonschurch.net
